Humanitarian Field Work

Orphelins Sida International is a non-profit organization that matches volunteers to partner projects. They support the children of AIDS victims in countries affected most by the epidemic, by arranging sponsorship programs and providing services for the local organizations that oversee them.

We volunteered on a three-week humanitarian field mission at Dayspring Children’s Home in Chittur, India. The facility takes in children who are orphaned due to parents suffering or deceased from AIDS, who are inflicted with AIDS themselves, or who are in need of a stable environment due to parental inabilities or hardship.

We worked with resident children aged 6 to 18, and assessed the operation for potential volunteer program improvements and new initiative recommendations.

  • Activities with children ranging from learning games to homework assistance to gardening.
  • Initiated an on-site gardening project that involves the children and provides variety in their diet.
  • Purchased agricultural supplies, equipment and raw food material.
  • Debriefed Orphelins Sida International and Dayspring on activities, observations and issues.
  • Presented recommendations on topics ranging from improved nutrition, education and healthcare to agriculture techniques.
  • Recommended a long-term agricultural initiative to generate supplemental revenue for the facility.
